Teething, let’s be honest, it can be painful for everyone in the house. Babies can become unsettled and grizzly. Any sleeping patterns they once had may be disrupted and a lack of appetite may be also apparent.
Signs and symptoms can vary widely from baby to baby. They may want to chew on everything, or not want to chew at all. Rosy cheeks, lack of appetite and increased drool can also be sure signs of teething.
Below are some great recipes and food options for the teething baby or toddler that you can try at home that may bring relief to your teething baby.
Apple and Clove
Clove is a great natural painkiller and relieves inflammation.
Be sure to use actual cloves and not clove oil as clove oil is not recommended for children as it can restrict breathing.
When this recipe is cooled to be semi frozen it is also soothing on babies’ gums.
1 Whole Clove (Not clove oil)
Peel and core apple and chop into small pieces. Cook with clove in a pot with 1 tablespoon of water. Cook for 5 minutes. Remove clove and discard, thicken if required.
Mash or puree. Serve cold.
Turmeric, Apple and Kumara
Turmeric is a fantastic natural painkiller and relieves inflammation.
When this recipe is cooled it is soothing on babies’ gums.
1 Pinch of turmeric
Peel and chop kumara and apple and cook in a pot with half a cup of water until tender.
Drain, then mash or puree with pinch of turmeric.
Serve icy cold.
Celery is a natural painkiller and when the celery is frozen it is also cold and soothing on babies gums.
For older toddlers over 2 years of age, freeze the celery in sticks and let them much on the frozen stick.
For younger babies, chop up and freeze and place into a mesh feeder, Fern Feeder or a piece of tied off cheesecloth/muslin. Or grate/ juice the celery and add to their favourite dish.
For older toddlers cut a banana lengthwise and place in the freezer, then let baby gnaw on the icy cold banana until it turns to mush.
For younger babies freeze pureed banana into ice cubes, then place into food processor or stick blend along with formula or breast milk to make a frozen “banana icecream”.
What to avoid
Citrus and other acidic foods can sting babies tender gums. Spicy foods may also cause irritation.
Please also be careful with babies and toddlers around frozen food, always be weary of frozen chunks that may pose a chocking hazard.
