Following on from First Foods for baby – 6 months. Below are some Healthy first food recipe options for the 8m + baby.
Once baby has had individual first foods introduced, you can introduce some wonderful food combinations to excite and interest baby’s palate.
From 8 – 10 months you can easily start to introduce baby to meats, spices, textures and finger foods and introduce them to what you are having as a family meal too.
Below are some fantastic meal ideas for the older baby.
2 Ingredient Food Options
Apple and Prune
A great combo to alleviate constipation in babies.
Ingredients:
1 Apple
5 Prunes
Method:
Peal and chop apple and cook in a pot with the prunes with 2 tablespoons of water.
Drain, then puree.
Kumara and Avocado
Ingredients:
1 Kumara
1 Avocado
Method:
Peel and chop kumara. Boil kumara in a pot with half a cup of water until tender.
Drain kumara, then mash or puree both kumara and avocado.
Apple and Kumara
Ingredients:
1 Kumara
1 Apple
Method:
Peel and chop kumara and apple.
Boil kumara in a pot with half a cup of water until tender.
Cook apple separately in a small pot with 2 tablespoons of water for 5 minutes.
Drain both, then mash or puree together.
Kiwifruit and Pear
A great combo to alleviate constipation in babies.
Ingredients:
1 Ripe kiwifruit
1 Ripe pear
Method:
Peel and chop both fruits and mash or puree.
3 or more ingredient food options
Lamb, Tomato and Polenta
Ingredients:
100g Lamb steak
1 Tomato
pinch of chopped thyme
2 tablespoons of polenta
Method:
Skin tomato and finely chop. Finely chop lamb and slow cook lamb, tomato, polenta and thyme in a small pot with half a cup of water on stove top for one hour (add extra water if necessary).
Cool and mash.
Chicken, Creamed Corn and Quinoa (whole or flaked)
Ingredients:
Chicken breast
1/4 cup creamed corn
3 tablespoons quinoa (whole or flaked)
Method:
bake chicken, then cool and shred finely cook quinoa in water, then drain.
Mix 3 ingredients together and serve
Simple Red Lentil curry
Ingredients:
Red Lentils (red as they are less gassy)
Tomato paste
Pumpkin – finely chopped
Onion
Teaspoon curry powder
Method:
Cook and drain lentils. Saute onions and pumpkin, add curry powder. Add ¼ cup water and cook until pumpkin is tender, add Tomato paste and cooked lentils.
Mushy baby baked beans
Ingredients:
1 can of kidney beans
Sautéed onion, grated carrot and garlic
1 heaped tablespoon tomato paste
Method:
Mix beans, tomato paste and sautéed onion, grated carrot and garlic together and serve
Baby Porridge with Beetroot and Blueberry
Ingredients:
1/2 cup fine grain oats
1 1/4 cup liquid (water/ milk/ rice milk/ almond milk)
1/2 cup blueberry
1 teaspoon finely grated beetroot
Method:
Cook oats and beetroot for 5 minutes.
Puree together the oats, beetroot and blueberries.
Please note, the beetroot may turn babies poop pink.
Baby “Ice Cream”
Ingredients:
½ banana
½ avocado
½ can coconut cream
Method:
Blend banana and avocado together and freeze into ice cubes.
When you wish to serve, take frozen cubes out from freezer and blend with coconut cream in a blender. It is cold and sweet, just like ice cream.
Black Bean, Chocolate Rice Pudding
Ingredients
coconut cream,
1 ripe pear (peeled) or equivalent of canned pear
1 cup cooked rice
1 can black beans
1 teaspoon Cocoa
Blend together coconut cream, pear, 1 can black beans and cocoa. Mix with rice. Chill and serve.
Avocado chocolate pudding
Ingredients:
Avocado
Cocoa
Maple syrup
Coconut cream
Method:
Blend avocado, cocoa powder, maple syrup, coconut cream, and cinnamon in a blender until smooth. Refrigerate pudding until chilled, about 30 minutes.
